Foreign Office, May 11, 1911. I AM directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit herewith, to be laid before the Secretary of State for India in Council, copy of a letter from Messrs. E. D. and David Sassoon and Co. on the subject of the Opium Agreement with China, which was signed on the 8th instant, together with copies of a telegram to His Majesty's Minister at Peking, and of the reply sent to Messrs. Sassoon after informal consultation with your department.‡

You will observe that Messrs. Sassoon have been informed that the question of telegraphing to the Government of India to stop further sales of opium until the situation is cleared has been referred to your department.
